Summary - Persuasion
Dr. Moussa and I both want great decisions and great buy-in. We differ on how to build both.
Dr. Moussa helps leaders learn to persuade others to the leader’s point of view. The leader makes the decision and uses persuasion to build buy-in. I would describe this type of conversation as a discussion, a conversation that compares and debates positions. Dr. Moussa’s strength and focus seems to be on helping leaders develop persuasion and negotiation skills. The reviewers and Dr. Moussa talk about “selling one’s ideas”, “to pull employees along with you”, “changing peoples’ minds and getting them onboard with your ideas”. “to win others over”. “Persuading others is more collaborative that dictating….”

My approach to collaboration helps leaders learn to lead/facilitate a very interactive team process to build many new points of view. The team makes the decision. The interactive nature of the facilitated dialogue builds buy-in. I would describe this type of conversation as structured dialogue, a conversation that generates learning.
I believe my approach provides a wider breadth and depth of ideas from the decision making participants, and due to the interactive nature of the facilitated dialogue, builds significantly better buy-in engaging the wonderful principle that people support what they help create.
The subtle but significant difference between the two approaches provides a choice of leadership styles. Both can provide a different kind of process and result depending the leader’s goals, resources, and constraints of the situation.
My approach offers a productive, competitive way to think about and deal with conflict/alternatives. This is an important revision to many leaders’ operating system about how they think about conflict, and generating and selecting options and building buy-in at the same time.
